1. Please introduce yourself and your background as an artist.
My name is Sang Ho Won, and I am an artist whose work centers around the concept of the “square space.” I studied traditional East Asian painting in university, but over time, my practice has expanded into a diverse range of media including sculptural forms, character-based imagery, and mixed media works incorporating wood. I pursue a multidisciplinary approach that harmonizes emotion and reason, breathing life into geometric structures through visual storytelling.

2. What themes or messages do you aim to convey through your work?
Most of us spend a significant portion of our lives within man-made, rectangular spaces—homes, offices, institutions—where countless narratives unfold. Yet paradoxically, the pursuit of happiness often drives us to seek meaning outside these confines. I believe that true happiness arises not from external circumstances but from a sense of personal fulfillment. My work transforms these everyday “square” spaces into playful and imaginative realms where stories unfold. I seek to express both the emotional and rational facets of human nature in a way that resonates with the viewer.
3. What is your process when developing a new piece, from concept to completion?
My ideas often begin with conversations—either from everyday interactions or through stories encountered in media. These moments of exchange often prompt new thoughts or perspectives, which I then explore in the context of my signature “square” visual language. I aim for balance in tone—not too heavy, not too light. The creative process involves sketching, intuitive drawing, and considering materials and colors, gradually shaping the idea into a visual form.
4. What inspires your work, and how does your environment influence your creative process?
I find inspiration in the repetition and unpredictability of daily life—especially in moments that spark joy or shared connection. Whether it's a casual comment, a playful exchange, or a conversation with fellow artists, these encounters often become seeds for creative exploration. I translate these everyday fragments into visual compositions, developing them through dialogue and experimentation with my peers.

5. Have you faced any challenges as an artist, and how have you overcome them?
Like many artists, I’ve faced ongoing financial challenges. Balancing artistic practice with family life and economic responsibilities is never easy. Ideally, I would dedicate all my time to creating, but practical realities often require me to juggle both. Despite these difficulties, I take solace in the fact that while I may not control the world, my work is entirely my own—shaped by my intentions, efforts, and vision. This autonomy, and the joy it brings, helps me persevere through adversity.
6. Do you believe your identity as an Asian artist influences your work?
Absolutely. As social beings, we are inevitably shaped by our cultural environment and lived experiences. My background in East Asian painting has subtly infused my work with a distinct visual sensitivity and philosophical outlook. These influences emerge not only in form and technique but also in the way I engage with space, material, and narrative.
7. Do you have any daily routines or creative habits that you find essential to your practice?
While I don’t follow a strict routine, I often jot down notes or impressions when I encounter compelling exhibitions or works. I also collect discarded or overlooked objects, reflecting on their histories and contemplating how they might be repurposed in my work. Like a child playing with building blocks, I focus less on assigning deep meaning and more on enjoying the creative process itself. That sense of playful engagement is central to my practice.
8. Could you tell us about your current projects or upcoming exhibitions?
I will be participating in the Seoul Formative Art Fair at the end of May. This year’s theme is “Retro,” and I am developing a body of work that reinterprets analog objects from my childhood—items imbued with personal nostalgia—through a contemporary lens. These pieces will evoke the emotional texture of bygone eras, creating a visual dialogue between memory and modernity. I look forward to sharing these works as a way to connect with viewers across generations.

1. 작가 소개와 작업 배경에 대해 말씀해 주세요.
저는 사각 공간을 중심으로 작업하는 작가 원상호입니다. 대학에서는 동양화를 전공했지만, 현재는 이를 기반으로 조형적 입체, 캐릭터 이미지, 나무를 활용한 조형 작업 등 다양한 매체를 넘나드는 멀티 작업을 전개하고 있습니다. 감성과 이성이 조화를 이루는 조형 언어를 통해, 사각 이미지에 생명력을 부여하고자 합니다.
2. 작품을 통해 전달하고자 하는 주제나 메시지는 무엇인가요?
인간은 대부분의 시간을 인공적인 사각 공간 안에서 보내며, 그 안에서 삶의 다양한 이야기가 펼쳐집니다. 그러나 정작 ‘행복’이라는 감정은 그 공간 밖에서 찾고자 하는 경우가 많습니다. 저는 진정한 행복이란 외부에서 오는 것이 아니라, 자기 내면의 만족감에서 비롯된다고 믿습니다. 이러한 생각을 바탕으로, 일상의 사각 공간을 다양한 놀이와 이야기의 장으로 삼아 이미지를 구성하고 스토리를 만들어가고 있습니다. 작업에서는 인간의 감성적 측면과 이성적 측면을 함께 보여주는 것을 중요하게 생각합니다.
3. 새로운 작업을 시작할 때, 아이디어 구상부터 완성까지의 과정은 어떻게 되나요?
아이디어는 일상 속에서 마주하는 사람들과의 대화, 언론 매체를 통한 다양한 이야기들로부터 출발합니다. 이를 공유하고 숙고하는 과정을 거치며, 나의 조형 언어인 ‘사각 작업’에 어떻게 적용할지를 고민합니다. 이미지 구상은 너무 무겁지도, 가볍지도 않게 균형을 맞추는 것을 지향하며, 간단한 낙서와 드로잉을 통해 구체화합니다. 이 과정에서 재료와 색상도 함께 고려합니다.
4. 작품에 영감을 주는 요소와 주변 환경이 창작에 미치는 영향은 무엇인가요?
반복되는 일상 속에서도 즐거움을 주는 순간들을 포착하고, 그것이 타인과의 공유 가능한 경험인지 고민하는 과정에서 영감을 받습니다. 때로는 무심코 던진 말 한마디, 친구나 동료 작가들과의 대화 속에서 새로운 주제와 접근법이 생겨나기도 합니다. 저는 이러한 소소한 일상과 주변인과의 교류 속에서 떠오르는 생각들을 이미지로 번역해내는 방식으로 작업을 이어갑니다.
5. 작가로서 겪은 어려움과 이를 극복한 방법은 무엇인가요?
대부분의 작가들이 그러하듯, 저 역시 경제적인 어려움을 겪어왔습니다. 가족과의 일상, 생계와 창작 활동을 병행하는 일은 쉽지 않습니다. 오직 작업에만 집중하고 싶지만 현실은 늘 경제적 활동과 병행할 수밖에 없습니다. 그러나 세상은 내 뜻대로 움직이지 않더라도, 작업만큼은 오롯이 나의 의지대로 만들어낼 수 있다는 점에서 큰 위안을 얻습니다. 이 작은 즐거움이 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 힘이 되어줍니다.
6. 아시아인으로서의 정체성이 작품에 영향을 미친다고 생각하시나요?
영향을 미친다고 생각합니다. 인간은 사회적 존재이며, 자신이 속한 문화적 환경과 생활 방식은 작업에 직간접적으로 반영됩니다. 저는 동양화라는 매체를 전공한 만큼, 조형 언어 안에 자연스럽게 동아시아적 사고와 미감이 스며들어 있다고 봅니다.
7. 작가로서의 일상 루틴이나 창작 과정에서 중요하게 여기는 습관이 있다면요?
특별한 루틴보다는, 일상 속에서 마주한 좋은 전시나 흥미로운 작품을 메모하고 기억해 두는 습관이 있습니다. 버려지거나 불필요한 물건들을 수집해두고, 그것들이 지닌 시간성과 기억을 떠올리며 작업에 어떻게 활용할 수 있을지 고민합니다. 마치 아이가 블록을 가지고 놀듯, 의미를 부여하기보다는 그 자체로의 즐거움을 느끼는 과정이 중요하다고 생각합니다.
8. 현재 작업 중인 작품이나 예정된 전시가 있다면 소개해 주세요.
오는 5월 말, 서울 조형아트페어에 참여할 예정입니다. 이번 전시의 주제는 ‘레트로(Retro)’로, 제가 어린 시절 사용했던 아날로그 물건들을 소재로 하여 그에 담긴 감성을 현대적인 조형 언어로 재해석해보고자 합니다. 추억과 감성이 교차하는 시간 속 이미지들을 통해 관객들과 소통할 수 있는 작품을 선보일 계획입니다.
