1. Please introduce yourself and share some background about your journey as an artist.
I was born and raised in poverty around the end of the Korean War. This challenging environment made it difficult to realize my artistic ideals and dreams. I believe these hardships have shaped my convictions, worldview, and artistic philosophy, and are deeply embedded in my work.
2. What themes or messages do you aim to convey through your artwork?
Through reflection on the issues of humanity, nature, and society, I advocate for collective action toward finding and practicing solutions. Among the many urgent problems facing humanity, global warming and the ecological crisis are paramount. I aim to inspire individual introspection and transformation to help drive a radical shift in our social systems toward a sustainable future. My “Gaze: Humanity, Nature, Society” series embodies this spirit as a form of enacting the spirit of our time.
3. What is your creative process, from generating ideas to completing a piece?
I have been deeply engaged in social movements throughout my life. From this activist perspective, I emphasize visual clarity and impact using simple forms and colors that symbolize restraint and solidarity.
4. What inspires your work, and how does your environment influence your creative process?
My primary concerns are issues related to humanity, nature, and society, which directly inform my work. My art is an act of solidarity and cooperation, calling for collective responsibility toward the spirit of our times.

5. What challenges have you faced as an artist, and how have you overcome them?
Hardship, deprivation, and daily prayers of gratitude lead to a life of dignity. Pope Francis, for example, left behind only 140,000 won (about $100) in total assets—this humility made his life shine even more. Great works are often born from the artist’s life of endurance and perseverance.
6. Do you believe your identity as an Asian influences your work, or do you view it as unrelated?
The emphasis on self-discipline and the cultivation of character is a core aspect of traditional Asian, especially Korean, spiritual heritage. As an artist who was mentored into the discipline, I deeply value human dignity. This value, though different from formal artistic techniques, remains a vital virtue even in contemporary progressive art.
7. What does your daily routine as an artist look like? Are there habits or practices that are important to your creative process?
While working, I listen to music that strengthens my artistic resolve—such as Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 or protest songs like March for the Beloved, which capture the spirit of resistance and collective pain.
8. Are you currently working on any projects or preparing for upcoming exhibitions?
I plan to continue exhibiting my “Gaze: Humanity, Nature, Society” series both domestically and internationally. The current exhibition in New Jersey holds great meaning for me. Following this, the upcoming show in Beijing at Dagao is also a significant opportunity that continues in the same thematic direction.

1. 자기소개와 작가로서의 배경에 대해 말씀해 주세요.
한국전쟁이 끝나가는 즈음에 가난 속에서 태어나고 자라면서 궁핍한 환경에서 작가적 이상과 꿈을 실현 하는데에 어려움이 있었다. 그것은 지금의 나의 신념이나 인생관 작가적 태도와 철학에도 영향을 미치는 것으로써 나의 작품에 스며든다고 생각한다.
2. 작품을 통해 전달하고자 하는 주제나 메시지는 무엇인가요?
인간, 자연, 사회의 문제를 사유하고 성찰하면서 인류가 함께 해법을 찾아 실천하기를 주장한다. 인류가 당면한 문제 중에서 가장 시급한 것은 지구온난화와 생태계문제이다. 나와 모든 개인의 성찰과 변혁을 통하여 지속 가능한 미래사회를 위해 사회공동체의 대변혁을 견인해 내고자 한다. 즉, 나의‘응시-인간. 자연. 사회 시리즈작업은 시대정신을 구현하는 행위이다.
3. 새로운 작품을 시작할 때 아이디어 구상부터 완성까지 어떤 과정을 거치시나요?
나는 평생을 사회운동에 주도적으로 참여하고 있다. 따라서 사회운동적 관점에서 절제와 연대를 상징하는 단순한 색과 조형으로 주목성을 강조하고자 한다.
4. 작품에 영감을 주는 것은 무엇인가요? 또, 주변 환경은 창작 과정에 어떤 영향을 미치나요?
나의 주된 관심사는 인간과 자연, 사회문제이다. 그것은 나의 작품에 영향을 준다. 즉 나의 작품은 시대정신에 함께 연대하고 협력하자고 호소하는 행위이다.
5. 작가로서 겪은 어려움이 있다면 무엇이고, 그것을 어떻게 극복하셨나요?
일상에서 시련과 결핍과 감사의 기도는 영광의 삶에 이르게 한다. 프란치스코 교황님은 전 재산 14만원만 남기고 가심으로 그의 삶이 더욱 빛났다. 좋은 작품은 작가의 인고의 삶에서 얻어지는 산물이다.
6. 아시아인으로서의 정체성이 작품에 영향을 미친다고 생각하시나요, 아니면 무관하다고 보시나요?
심신의 수행과 인격의 도야를 중시하는 것은 아시아지역 특히 한국의 전통적 정신문명의 뿌리라고 할 수 있다. 더구나 스승의 가르침을 통하여 입문한 작가로서는 인간의 품격을 매우 중요하게 생각한다. 그것은 작품의 법과는 다른 차원의 것으로써 진보적 현대미술에도 여전히 중요한 덕목이 되어야 한다고 생각한다.
7. 작가로서의 일상 루틴을 말씀해 주세요. 창작 과정에서 중요한 습관이나 실천이 있다면요?
작업 하는 동안 작가의 의지를 다지기 위해서 베토벤의 운명교향곡을 듣거나 집회광장에서의 임을 위한 행진곡 등 운동가요나 시대적 아픔을 담은 노래를 듣는다.
8. 현재 작업 중인 작품이나 프로젝트, 예정된 전시가 있다면 소개해 주세요.
응시: 인간. 자연. 사회시리즈 작품전시회를 국내외적으로 계속할 계획이다. 이번 뉴져지 에서의 전시는 나에게 큰 의미가 있다. 이어지는 중국 베이징 다가오 전시도 같은 맥락으로써 매우 중요한 전시기회가 주어진 것이다.
